First look at Rami Malek as Freddie in Bohemian Rhapsody!

The Mr. Robot star is preparing to play Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody (out Dec. 25, 2018), the Bryan Singer-directed film that chronicles Queen from 1970, when Mercury teamed with Brian May and Roger Taylor, until the band’s performance at Live Aid in 1985, six years before the singer died of complications from AIDS. Malek channels Mercury’s look from that global-concert event.

Now it's in the popular news sites.

Anyway, here is an article link: "Keep Sex, AIDS, and the Closet in Freddie Mercury's Biopic." The author Tim Teeman seems to recycle a lot of published stories as if they had been told to him personally, which I dislike. His overall point about changing cultural attitudes towards AIDS and what makes for a good biopic are on point.

Has anyone else read this book yet? I got it for Christmas and I'm not quite sure what I thought about it.

Don't know if you all saw this article on but it was kind of a fun read.

All Hail the Defiant Science Fictional Weirdness of Queen! by Robert Repino

They left off Freddie's involvement in Dave Clark's musical Time, which was also SF I think.

I thought George's cover of "Somebody to Love" was the only good cover of it.
Sorry to be a week late but at least I'm posting now.

Rami Malek to play Freddie Mercury in Queen movie Bohemian Rhapsody

So, the latest news. At least they found an actor of color.

Not a very imaginative title.

My my expectations are very low.

Thoughts? Reasons for hopefulness?

Is anyone ordering the new boxed set of Freddie's singles on colored vinyl?

I have all these songs already; I think they've been released on at least two previous sets: the big Freddie box and the 2 disk slipcased set excerpted from it. But those weren't on colored vinyl, I suppose. I haven't owned vinyl in decades. I guess this is for the Freddie-loving vinyl heads who want to play 45s.

Supposedly there are are previously unpublished photos in the booklet but the video looks like it's mostly images from the music videos, so are we calling screencaps "previously unpublished" now or ?  Anyway, I count on tumblr to have them all scanned and posted.

Technical note: I tried to embed the video but YouTube isn't giving me an embed code and the shortcode won't work on Dreamwidth. Perhaps because I'm on a tablet.

Anyway, thoughts on the singles box?

Over on Queenzone, Daniel Nester tracked down the whole email on Wikileaks and posted it. The discussion runs to 3 pages so far.  Here is a fuller text of the leaked email I posted in the previous post.

Notes from Sony head, pasted below. From here:

Thirty-five years ago tonight, Queen rounded off their 1979 tour with a performance at the Hammersmith Odeon in London, in aid of the recently liberated Cambodia. And some kind soul has put a very nice version of it up on YouTube! It's not the full thing - Bohemian Rhapsody is missing, and looks like one or two other songs as well, plus Mustapha is present just in montage form - but it's the closest I've seen so far. This is highly recommended; one of the best filmed concerts I've seen from the band. Excellent camera work, the boys seem to be having a great time, and Freddie and Roger are in particularly fine voice. There's something of an end-of-term vibe, perhaps because of it being the last stop of the tour: Freddie seems to forget to sing the opening verse of Don't Stop Me Now for instance! It rather adds to the fun. Sterling rendition of Sheer Heart Attack as well, with some very gleeful "punk" behaviour from Freddie!

It's in four parts, so there are some breaks, but the playlist autoplay ought to take you through it smoothly enough. Very much worth a watch. :)

One hour eleven minutes in total.

Remembering Freddie and all those we have lost and all those still affected. Looking forward to a world without AIDS someday.

The Queen Forever collection is available for pre-order (it'll be released November 10th).

Now, the question is, do I really want to pay 12 euros for three new songs (one of which is only semi-new)...?

What do you guys think of this crowd?? I think it's quite a decent impersonation but i don't like them.

It's like instant decaf coffee.

After a nice warm summer, and a fair bit of recent rain, Freddie is really starting to show off! When there are several flowers of differing age, there's a lovely mixed colour effect, which is quite striking.

Also, all those flowers make him smell very nice indeed! ;)

Most fans are probably aware that Freddie loved flowers, and took great delight in his garden. Several years ago, a rose breeder created a special rose in his memory, and I bought one last winter. It's just flowered for the first time, and I thought I'd share some pictures here.

Beneath the cut for neatness )
